Behind the estimate

Method & sources

Where to find your figures

Request a payoff quote from the lender and use the insurer's estimated net settlement for the same scenario. If the settlement already accounts for the deductible, enter that amount directly.

How the math works

Subtract the net insurance settlement from the payoff. If the settlement meets or exceeds the payoff, the shortfall is zero.

Worked example

A $26,500 payoff and a $21,000 net settlement leave a $5,500 shortfall before GAP.

What this estimate covers

The calculator models the pre-GAP balance. Contract limits, excluded charges, and deductible treatment affect the amount a GAP provider may pay.

Common questions

Should I use the balance on my last loan statement?

Use the lender’s current payoff quote. Its amount can differ from the statement balance because the payoff applies to a particular date and may include interest or other charges.

Do I subtract my deductible from the insurer’s payment?

Enter the net primary settlement after applicable deductions. If the insurer’s quoted amount already reflects the deductible, use that figure directly. Your GAP contract determines how a separate benefit treats that deductible.
